Indigenous Australian War Service on show at AIATSIS

A mysterious collection item and photographs of Aboriginal servicemen who served in the Gallipoli campaign are the focus of a new display in the Stanner Room at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). AIATSIS staff members Rita Metzenrath and John Richards talk about the display as well as the unique and diverse collection items held at AIATSIS dedicated to Indigenous Australian war service.

“The AIATSIS collection is important because it tracks the journey of recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service.” – Rita Metzenrath

“You have to remember Indigenous men weren’t actually allowed to enlist unless they were of substantially European origin. So these men managed to get past it.” – John Richards
